Watch mountain gorillas in Bwindi National Park; find the source of the River Nile around Lake Victoria; go white-water rafting near Jinja; see otters and water birds on Lake Bunyonyi; go trekking in the Rwenzori Mountains; drink fermented banana beer. West of Kenya and north of Tanzania, the Republic of Uganda has no coast, yet, flanked by Lakes Victoria and Albert, it encompasses a very large amount of fresh water. The population of more than 24 million is an intricate mosaic of tribal peoples, from the Batwa and Bambuti Pygmies to the pastoral Karimojong and the core Bantu-speaking cultures of the kingdoms of Buganda, Bunyoro, Ankole and Toro. But despite the colour of their traditions and music, it is the natural world that is the big draw of the country: the unspoilt Ssesse Islands, the magnificent Murchison Falls, and the elephants and antelopes of Queen Elizabeth National Park.Membership
