Country Overview

Clean, law-abiding and efficient, the Republic of Austria offers a sublime range of activities in some of the most spectacular scenery in Europe. And there is a rich seam of culture and tradition to explore, from the ornate palaces and galleries of Vienna to the medieval spires and absorbing museums of Salzburg, the picturesque birthplace of Mozart. This is also the country of Strauss, where river trips on the Danube capture something of the spirit of his waltzes. In this land of green pastures, snow-capped Alps and rushing rivers there are more than 95 well placed hostels. Many of them can provide a range of packages such as snowboarding and skiing in the winter, and waterskiing, sailing and hiking (there is a huge choice of well signposted trails) in the summer.
