Country Overview
Visit glorious, onion–domed churches; see ornate Baroque buildings and palaces; take a train trip on one of the most famous routes in the world; watch ballet; drink vodka. From the northern steppes and tundra of Siberia to the Caucasus Mountains and the Caspian Sea in the south, Russia is huge - and offers an enormous wealth of cultural treasures. The Trans Siberian Railway provides a 9445km journey from Moscow, the capital, to Valdivostock on the Pacific Coast. Moscow itself offers the wonders of the Kremlin and Red Square as well as a host of intriguing museums. Within fairly easy reach are the historic towns, monasteries and fortresses of Russia's Golden Ring. To the west is Novgorod with its medieval markets and churches. To the north, on the Gulf of Finland, St Petersburg remains one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Located in the three major sightseeing cities, Russia's hostels are convenient gateways for exploring this alluring country.Membership
